THE BIGGE$T FIGHT IN HISTORY

The Hype

The biggest fight in history is taking place this Saturday, September the 14th at the sold out MGM Grand in Las Vegas between welterweight champ Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr and light middleweight champ Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. They will be fighting at a catch weight of 152 lbs., 2 lbs. under the light middleweight limit and 5 lbs. over the welterweight limit. This will be one of Money Mayweather's toughest challenges in a while and the fans think so too. According to Forbes, tickets were sold out in less than 24 hours they went on sale, with a record gate sale of $19.9 Million, breaking the previous record held by Mayweather vs. De La Hoya in 2007 with $18.4 million. Showtime has been promoting the big event with their popular All Access series which shows an inside look at how both fighters prepare for their big bout. According to Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer (Canelo’s promoter) ticket sales are always an indicator of Pay-Per-View sales.  If this trend proves correct, this fight labelled "The One" will be a PPV blockbuster. This fight is expected to beat Mayweather vs. De La Hoya's 2007 record of 2.44 million PPV buys.

All Access: Mayweather vs. Canelo- Full Episode 1

Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr

The favorite is the undefeated pound for pound kingpin Floyd Mayweather with an impressive record of 44 wins (26 KO) 0 losses. Floyd's lightning speed, near perfect defense and exceptional hand skills has dominated multiple professional weightclasses since getting bronze for USA at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Mayweather's biggest fights include wins over hall of fame fighters De la Hoya, Mosley, Marquez, Cotto and Guerrero most recently for his welterweight title last May. Mayweather will earn $41.5 million guaranteed, and that doesn't include his PPV cut. At 36 years of age, can Floyd still remain on top?

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez

The underdog is light middleweight champ Saul "Canelo" (Spanish for cinnamon) Alvarez. At only 23 years old, he holds a record of 42 wins (30 KO) 0 losses 1 draw. Turning pro at 16 years of age, Canelo is by far Mexico's most popular boxer. Most recently scoring big wins over Austin Trout to take the light middleweight title and future hall of famer Shane Mosley, Canelo has solidified his spot as boxing's next big superstar. Alvarez is the naturally younger, bigger, stronger fighter but has never faced Floyd’s speed, defense or counterpunching. Canelo's purse is $12 million, but this doesn’t include his endorsements and PPV cut.  Did the young red haired Mexican, bite off more than he can chew?

Prediction

This maybe Floyd's biggest payday to date, but he is no stranger to the bright lights. This is by far Canelo's biggest fight of his career, his past couple fights have been on Mayweather's undercards building up his name. Floyd's big fight experience may play a role, with his great ability to change his game plan mid-fight and his veteran tactics that can throw off young fighters. Canelo is a power puncher with vicious combinations, decent defense, good boxing IQ and faster than he gets credit for but Floyd's great speed, defense, and accurate counter punching will neutralize Canelo for the most part. Canelo may have his spots and does have a puncher's chance, but "Money" Mayweather should win on all scorecards going the full 12 rounds.
